Pet renter guide
Pet-Friendly Apartment Checklist
Compare pet limits, breed rules, deposits, pet rent, relief areas, flooring, elevators, and nearby walking options before renting.
Verify the written pet policy
- Maximum number of pets
- Breed or weight restrictions
- One-time pet fees or deposits
- Monthly pet rent
- Required records and vaccinations
- Rules for visiting pets
Evaluate daily convenience
Consider elevator wait times, stair access, outdoor relief areas, nearby sidewalks, shade, waste stations, and the distance from the unit to an exit. A building may be pet-friendly on paper but inconvenient for daily routines.
Protect your deposit
Document existing flooring, door, screen, and baseboard conditions during move-in. Review cleaning and damage standards before signing, and keep copies of pet approvals and payments.
